Vince Gironda Bench Press


Is the bench press good or bad?

Q. I was reading online that bodybuilding trainer Vince Gironda didn't like the bench press and felt it didn't do much for chest development but worked mostly front delt. What is your opinion is the bench press good or bad for chest?

A. I will have to disagree with Vince on this one. You have to remember that many people he trained were actors that didn't want big pectorals. But if your goal is to really build up the chest muscles the bench press is the number one exercise, number two is incline bench press and number three is dips. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbu and Lou Ferrigno are examples of men that had enormous pecs and they all did the bench press as their main chest exercise.

With that said, I still think that Vince Gironda was a genius and his training principles were before their time.
